Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi mentioned in a song that nutrition and education are the two legs of a human being. The adverse impact of malnutrition starts from the womb. Our most urgent task is to fight maternal and foetal under and malnutrition in order to avoid low birth weight babies. Nutrition security involving physical, economic and social access to balanced diet and clean drinking water is basic requirement for a happy and productive life. Inspite of numerous nutrition safety nets programmes, the level of under and malnutrition prevailing in India is unacceptably high.
In response to this concern, over 100 high level professionals participated in a National Nutrition Conclave at Chennai, India, between August 12-14, 2007 to consider the critical question : “A Nutrition Secure India : How do we get there?” this resulted in the Chennai Declaration, which led to a nutrition White Paper for the country, and the formation of a National Coalition for Sustainable Nutrition Security to pursue a ‘Leadership Agenda for Action’.
I am happy to launch this website which will enable access to authentic information on the Leadership Agenda. The website will also help to spread information on all the important initiatives in the country for achieving the goal of a nutrition secure India. My gratitude goes to all the Expert Task Force members, special reviewers and the Coalition Secretariat, who are helping not only the launching and updating this website but also to promote the development of public policies which can ensure food for all and forever. |
